New Delhi:

India saw the biggest daily surge in Covid cases since mid September with 93,249 fresh infections reported since yesterday, taking the tally to over 1.24 crore cases. Today’s surge is the highest since September 19 when 93,337 infections were recorded. The country also reported 513 virus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, which is 28 per cent lower than the 714 fatalities that were reported yesterday.

Eight states account for 81.42 per cent of the infections reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry. These eight states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

Sixty per cent of the daily cases are coming from Maharashtra alone. The western state – which has shown a nine-fold jump in the last two months -reported 49,447 coronavirus cases and 277 deaths on Saturday. Eight of the ten districts with the highest number of coronavirus cases are in Maharashtra.

State capital Mumbai reported more than 9,000 daily coronavirus cases on Saturday – its highest ever single-day spike since the begining of the pandemic. It also logged 27 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The worrying surge of Covid cases has forced the BCCI to reportedly keep Hyderabad and Indore as stand by venues for the IPL. Delhi Capitals’ Axar Patel, 10 members of the ground staff at Wankhede stadium and six event managers, deployed by the BCCI, have contracted the disease.

Meanwhile, Delhi recorded over 3,500 coronavirus cases for the second consecutive day on Saturday. The positivity rate in the national capital has risen to 4.48 percent from 4.11 per cent the day before, according to the health department.
