Another record revenue month for Ohio casinos and racinos

Gambling revenues just keep rolling into Ohio casino and racino venues. The August 2021 reports are in and in just one month, the state has seen over $194 million in earnings after winnings were paid. With this total, the state’s 11 gambling facilities have now earned almost $1.6 billion in revenues. The state was able to beat last August’s record of $172.1 million, seeing an increase in revenue by 12.9%.

Breakdown of Totals

The top earner in the state was MGM Northfield Park. The venue brought in $23.3 million. This was a more than 20% increase from last August. JACK Cleveland Casino generated just under $22 million, also earning over 20% from last year. JACK Thistledown Racino earned $17 million, also over 20% better than the same month in 2020.

Each of the four casinos in Ohio is allowed to offer poker gaming, slots, and table games. There are seven racinos in the state with facilities offering skill-based games such as video lottery terminals. It seems that players are enjoying all the gaming options more than ever this year, possibly due to the relaxation of COVID-19 protocols as well as vaccinations.

While August hit a new record, it does not beat the June and July totals. Back in June, the state saw just over $196 million in earnings while July was even higher at $211.2 million.

2021 Earnings

As each month hits new record highs, Ohio has been able to generate almost $1.6 billion in yearly revenues. A portion of the revenues earned goes to taxes and fees in the state. So far this year, the top earner has been MGM Northfield Park. The casino has generated over $183 million thus far. Close behind is the Hollywood Casino Columbus, earning $176.4 million.

Next is JACK Cleveland Casino at $172 million in earnings while the Hollywood Casino Toledo brought in just over $163 million. Eldorado Gaming Scioto reported $156.9 million while Hard Rock Cincinnati Casino generated just over $149 million.

The casinos in the state have thus far had a great year. Even going back to when 2021 started, the venues were reporting high earnings. In March, the casinos generated over $215 million, a huge increase from the previous year and earlier records.

This year, it seems the pent-up demand from last year’s COVID-19 shutdown is driving players to the gaming tables and slot machines. Players are better able to travel this year as well as more willing to do so, which helps to bring in more revenues to the state. It will be interesting to see if the increase continues for the remainder of the year.
